A live oak stands
On the lawn of the church.
On its branches, thick as trees themselves,
Grow Resurrection ferns.
On the altar candle flames shine
On a single strand of
Cobweb, hanging from a ceiling light.
The pastor calmly sits through the anthem
And the Bible reading,
Then stands to preach.
He sees in his congregation
Stolid pillars of the church,
Like the live oak tree,
And pure souls, like the candle flames,
And those whose faith is just a single cobweb strand.
One or two, sitting in the pews,
Have souls that need spring cleaning,
Like the lights,
And three or four, the very old,
Wait for the Resurrection, like the ferns.

Dr. Ravi Zacharias
2008 Honorary Chairman, National Day of Pray Task Force

Holy Father, in a world where so many are hungry,
You have given us food in abundance;
In a world where so many are hurting,
You offer to bind up our wounds;
In a world where so many are lonely,
You offer friendship to every heart;
In a world longing for peace,
You offer hope.

Yet, we are so stubborn and resistant.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord.
Our nation is at a crossroads this year;
we look to You to be our strength and shield.

Please give us the guidance to elect one who will honor you
and to respond to the wisdom from above
so that our hope may be renewed and our blessings be treasured.
In God’s holy name. Amen

The organ is wearing out, and it is very difficult for our organist to keep it in good working order. After much discussion with our choir director, and our minister, the worship Committee at it’s April 2 meeting voted to recommend to the board that no more money be spent on repairs for our organ. The last effort to repair it would have cost $780 with no guarantee that it would last long. Since we cannot afford to buy a new one, we would simply use the piano until we can afford a new one.

We will be receiving our Pentecost Offering May 4th and May 11th. Our goal is $1,000.

The Pentecost offering supports Disciples New Church Ministry and regional New Church ministry efforts to start new communities of faith. Please be generous in your support of this special offering.

Thanks,
Bill Bagby
Outreach Chairman

In April we had a most interesting program brought to us by Barbara Davis, using the many dolls she has made as a means of teaching us how to use our talents. I’m sorry if you missed it.

We elected new officers who will begin their office after the June meeting. They are: President, Peggy Richardson; Vice President, Millie Stephens; Secretary, Bette Benz; Treasurer, Priscilla Vilord. We thank each of you for the commitment you have made.

The funds netted from the March Card Party were $931.47, and we voted to add enough to it to make a $1000.00 gift to the Family Promises Program.

Lois Rammel and Sally Jones took the items church members have brought for the Nesbit home for girls to their facility, and there were too many items for them to use, so the remainder were taken to the Lighthouse. They were very well received, as the Lighthouse is full and bursting at the seams with abused women and their children. We voted to have a shower for the Lighthouse during the month of May. Items can be left in the Sunday school room across the hall from the choir room anytime during the month of May. The following items are items they have requested; non-perishable food, boxes of juice for the children, bacterial hand soap, disinfected spray, gas cards, dishwasher detergent, garbage bags, fabric softener, Kleenex, flashlights and batteries, ladies deodorant, laundry detergent, toothpaste and brushes, paper towels and toilet tissue.

Don’t forget to get you tickets for the Mother/Daughter/Friend breakfast to be held at 8:30 on May 10th. Your tickets will be sold in the Fellowship Hall each Sunday through May 4th.

Prayer For The Week of April 27
We pray this day, O God, for all people who are broken in body, mind, and spirit; For the bereaved, the lonely, the willful and the wayward. Grant, Gracious Lord, healed bodies, awakened minds, and renewed spirits. We pray for the forgiveness of our sins, for we earnestly long to be made whole. May we be worthy and made ready to be your productive disciples. We praise you and give you thanks, in the name of Christ. Amen,

Vicki doesn’t remember too much about Germany because she was only 2 years old, but in Turkey she remembers having to cover the windows and car headlights with black bags to prevent light from leaking at night.
