What We Believe
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) had its beginnings in the early nineteenth century on the American Frontier with the Presbyterian ministers Barton Stone, Thomas Campbell and his son, Alexander Campbell. We grew out of the Barton-Stone movement which emphasized freedom and diversity. We reject creeds and only require that persons make a public confession that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God” and accept him as “our Lord and Savior.”
Following New Testament practice, Disciples celebrate Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper) each week for spiritual renewal and in remembrance of the sacrificial love of Christ. Although we practice baptism of believers by immersion, we acknowledge and accept God’s gracious gift of baptism without requiring rebaptism.
In keeping with our emphasis on freedom and personal theological integrity, we do not vote to accept or reject applicants for membership. We welcome any Christian's full participation in Holy Communion.
A distinctive quality of our fellowship is the role women play in the leadership of our church. Both men and women are invited and encouraged to hold any office of the church. We encourage a spirit of openness and inclusiveness, as evidenced by lively discussions in Sunday School classes and diversity of opinions.
At Fairhope Christian Church everyone is free to explore his or her own relationship with God and express personal faith in an atmosphere of love and respect.

History
The Fairhope Christian Church was organized on September 8, 1896, shortly after the establishment of the Henry George Single Tax Colony in Fairhope. It was Fairhope’s first congregation.
Initially, services were held in the homes and businesses of members, but on May 17, 1901, the first church building was dedicated at the corner of Church and St. James Streets. Members of many different churches met and worshipped together, as Fairhope Christian Church was the only house of worship in Fairhope at the time. The building was in use until 1961, when the present building was completed. Additional classrooms and office space were added in 1988.
We at Fairhope Christian Church strive to be a unifying congregation in which each person can seek God in his or her own unique way and people of all Christian faith traditions can come together in worship and service to our Lord, unfettered by restrictive doctrines or dogmas.
